The Commonwealth Games 2010 is the next biggest international sports event that is going to be held in New Delhi, the capital of India. In the year 2005, Randhir Singh, the vice-president of the Commonwealth Games Federation vice-president, expressed the concern that New Delhi was behind the schedule in creating an organizing committee for the commonwealth games 2010. In the year 2008, the Commonwealth Games Federation approved the progress of Delhi in organizing the Commonwealth Games to be held in the month of October in the year 2010. The committee conducting the Commonwealth Games 2010 has already selected certain venues for the different sports events.
As far as hockey in the commonwealth Games 2010 is concerned, the Dhyan Chand National Stadium has been chosen as the venue for the sport event of Hockey.
Lal Krishna Advani, the then Home Minister of India, dedicated this national stadium to the Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player. The stadium often referred to as the “temple of Indian hockey”. Dhyan Chand National Stadium, which is going to serve as one of the venues of the sporting events in the commonwealth games 2010, is a is a field hockey stadium. It is located at Patiala House in new Delhi. Named after the great hockey player and former captain of the Indian Hockey team, the Dhyan Chand National Stadium has the capacity to accommodate about twenty five thousand people. There is a cricket coaching center in this particular New Delhi stadium. The Indian cricket player, Ms.Sunita Sharma, comes to this stadium to provide coaching in cricket. She is the winner of the prestigious Dronacharya Award. She won this award for her great performances in cricket.
Dhyan Chand National Stadium served as the venue for 1st Asian Games held in the year 1951. In the coming Commonwealth Games, the aforementioned national stadium will serve as the venue for the sporting events like hockey and boxing.
