Wrestling

Wrestling is one of the sports that is played in the Commonwealth Games. The next Commonwealth Games will be held in the year 2010. The place which has been scheduled for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is Delhi, India. India is the third developing country which will be hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games are held every 4 years, the last being held in 2006 in Australia. Wrestling remains one of the major attractions of the Commonwealth Games.
Wrestling requires physical techniques like holding, clinching, locking, and leverage. This sport is played by two opponents and it is to physically defeat the opponent.
It is one of the sports where fighting and self defence techniques are used. Wrestling which is one of the most popular sports in the 2010 Commonwealth Games is one of the oldest sports and has a long history. Wrestling has featured as the most popular sport in the Olympic Games for 100 years.
The disciplines for Wrestling are defined by FILA. The disciplines have been classified into 2 categories. These two categories are folk wrestling disciplines and International wrestling disciplines. The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles says that currently five International wrestling disciplines exist which have been acknowledged all over the world. These include the Greco-Roman Wrestling, Grappling, Freestyle Wrestling, Sambo and Beach wrestling.
The venue for wrestling in 2010 Commonwealth Games is the Indira Gandhi Arena. Besides wrestling, the arena will also host sports like cycling, archery and gymnastics. The Public Works Department has also been assigned to build up a multipurpose indoor stadium which will be air-conditioned. This will be for wrestling and other sports like badminton, and net ball. This stadium will also be used for training. There will be a line up of other facilities as well which will be offered to the wrestling teams.
There will be a provision of a warm-up hall. This will have a capacity for four wrestling mat areas and these will be adjacent to the competition areas. In the 2002, Palwinder Singh Cheema representing India won gold in Super heavy weight. In Commonwealth games, the weightlifting categories are Light Flyweight, Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavy Weight, Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight.
