The next big event to be taking place in Delhi, India is the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Delhi which is a city with a population of 15 million and one of the biggest metropolitans in the world has hosted the Asian Games twice. The Asian Games which have been two big sports events to have been held in the capital were in the years 1951 and 1982. However the 2010 Commonwealth Games is going to be the biggest event of its kind to be held in this Indian city. Weightlifting is one of the sports that will be held in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Weightlifting has remained a very popular sport in this event.
India is the third developing country which will be playing host to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The first developing country to host the Commonwealth Games was Jamaica. It was in the year 1966. After that Malaysia hosted the 1998 Commonwealth Games. After 1998, this will be the second time the Commonwealth Games is being held in Asia. Weightlifting is a sport where the competitors make an attempt to lift heavy weights. These weights are mounted on bars of steel which are called barbells. To execute this successfully, one needs to have full flexibility, power, flexibility, skill and concentration. Fitness and physical strength in weightlifting is of utmost important.
There are many Olympic sports that are included in the Commonwealth Games as well and weightlifting is one of them. The last Commonwealth Games was held in the year 2006. The Women’s Weightlifting was awarded the first gold medal that year. The woman athlete was Kunjarani Devi Nameirakpam and she had represented India. The next winner was Marilou Dozois-Prevost who won silver. She had won the Silver. Erika Yamazaki was awarded the bronze. She had represented Australia.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games Weightlifting will be held in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Besides weightlifting other sports like lawn bowls will also be held here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium has a capacity to accommodate as many as 130,000 people. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium happens to be the world’s second-largest stadium. The stadium is currently under renovation works.
