India is the third developing country which will be playing host to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The first developing country to host the Commonwealth Games was Jamaica. It was in the year 1966. After that Malaysia hosted the 1998 Commonwealth Games. After 1998, this will be the second time the Commonwealth Games is being held in Asia. Weightlifting is a sport where the competitors make an attempt to lift heavy weights. These weights are mounted on bars of steel which are called barbells. To execute this successfully, one needs to have full flexibility, power, flexibility, skill and concentration. Fitness and physical strength in weightlifting is of utmost important.
There are many Olympic sports that are included in the Commonwealth Games as well and weightlifting is one of them. The last Commonwealth Games was held in the year 2006. The Women’s Weightlifting was awarded the first gold medal that year. The woman athlete was Kunjarani Devi Nameirakpam and she had represented India. The next winner was Marilou Dozois-Prevost who won silver. She had won the Silver. Erika Yamazaki was awarded the bronze. She had represented Australia.
