The first ever held “Commonwealth games” was known as the British Empire Games and it was held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the year 1930. In the year 1954, the name was changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Again in 1970, the name was replaced by British Commonwealth. The current name “Commonwealth Games” was given in the year 1974.
The Commonwealth Games include a number of sports that are held in the Olympic sports. They also include sports that are majorly played in the Commonwealth countries. These games are lawn bowls, netball, rugby sevens and others. There are a total of 71 teams that participate in the Commonwealth Games, out of which one team represents the tennis team. There are currently 53 members belonging to the Commonwealth of Nations.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be held in Delhi, India. Delhi which is one of the biggest cities in the world will be hosting the biggest event of its kind in the city. The city had hosted the Asian Games in the years 1951 and 1982. Tennis along with archery has been included in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, in the list of disciplines. Randhir Singh, the Secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association, had declared that the executive board had included tennis and archery.
