Rugby

Rugby is referred to a category of game that has developed down the years at the Rugby school of England. Rugby is the joint name of Rugby League and rugby union, the name by which it is known today. This game is played with a ball almost resembling football, with the only difference in the fact that this game uses hands and feet. This game is also a favorite pastime in American and European countries. This game is one of the major contributors in Common wealth games. This favorite sport has started to be included in any of the major sporting event.
Rugby consists of fifteen players in each team. The game demands fair play and observance of rules in a true spirit. The players carry the ball, pass it to their fellow players and even kick and ground the ball. The rugby ball looks slightly different from the soccer and football balls due to its oval shape. According to the IRB Law, it is stated that the Rugby ball should be oval with four panels. It should be within 200 to 300 mm in length, while the material that should be used for this ball should be leather or any other synthetic material. This provides for easy grip and it should also be water resistant. Weight of the rugby ball is supposed to be from 400 to 450 grams approx.
Like other games, this game of rugby also has certain specific terms. Beyond or Front are the terms used to signify the position meaning “with both feet”, dead is the term that is used to imply that the play has been stopped by the referee. A drop kick takes place when the ball is made to fall from the hands to the ground while kicking it at the first bounce. After a ball is kicked from the position when it is placed on the ground, it is called place kick. A penalty kick is granted from the place called mark, while the shot of kicking the ball falls from the hand before reaching the ground is called punt.
Rugby was earlier known as the game of the middle class or the working class in some places. Rugby sevens is a form of Rugby union who played at the Commonwealth games. In this team there are seven players instead of 15 players. There are various rules associated with this change in the game structure. There is women's rugby team that has been in vogue for quite some time. During the Sports in 2010 Commonwealth Games, we are going to watch some thrilling rugby matches.
