Athletics

Athletics is the sport in which a lot of field and track activity is involved. Running, jumping and throwing – all three of these are incorporated in the category of athletics. This word has been derived from the Greek word “athlos” meaning contest or competition. These sports were encouraged in the middle ages, where people were trained in running, wrestling and jumping. The Commonwealth games have a separate section of athletics, which comprises of running, throws, jumping. These are all field events which are to be hosted in any of the venues in New Delhi.
During winters, the run is indoors and during summer and spring there is an outdoor run. Thus, there are basically two seasons in this regard. Length of the indoor tracks is approx 200 meters comprising of 5-6 lanes. 120 and 150 meters of indoor tracks have also been used for run. There are also big tracks which are more than 200 meters that are used for American collegiate athletics. Indoor athletics in field events comprise of high jump, long jump, pole vault, shot put and triple jump. Hammer, javelin and discus throws are scheduled for outdoor events due to the usage of space.
Track and field season usually begin in spring continuing through summers. This outdoor activity contains oval tracks of almost 400 meters. The field events can be performed interiors of the in-field. In a race, both men and women are not allowed to compete against each other. While running, women face the same distance as men are allotted. Though, in case of steeplechase barriers and hurdles the height is lower than men. Same is with the case of weights of hammer, javelin and discus they are lesser in comparison to the males. Most of these athletics games are included in the list of Sports in 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Track events constitutes of running on a 400 meters track. Different categories in this are sprints, long distance, middle distance, hurdling, relays, race walking and road running. Whereas events on field constitute various throwing events, jumping events and combined events like pentathlon, heptathlon and Decathlon. Sprints are traces that cover short distances while the long distance track events require a lot of physical and mental stability for the athlete. These events of athletics make the whole competition lively.
The long distance tracks are 10,000 to 15,000 meters in distance covering a huge area. There are types of throwing like shot put, discus throw etc, and jumping events involving high, low, pole, standing high jump, long jump and triple jumps. There are different venues in New Delhi which are being chosen for hosting the athletics events.
