1986 Commonwealth Games

The world witnessed the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland, in stunning venues like Meadowbank Stadium, Royal Commonwealth Pool, Strathclyde Park and Barry Buddon. This was the second time that the Commonwealth games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, the first time being in 1970. 24th July to 2nd August 1986 was an exciting time for the sports lovers as 1986 Commonwealth Games were held during this time.
Unfortunately, the success and popularity of the 1970 Commonwealth games held in Edinburgh couldn't be sustained in the 1986 Commonwealth games.
The 1986 Commonwealth Games began on a somewhat disturbing note with 32 of the 59 Commonwealth nations due to take part boycotted the Games, as a protest against the the Thatcher Government's attitude towards British sporting links with apartheid-era South Africa. As a significant number of Asian, African and Caribbean countries boycotted the Games, almost all the participants in the 1986 Commonwealth Games were white. Moreover, the Organizing Committee faced serious financial setbacks and the game began with a deficit of a few million dollars.
A total of 502 medals were won in the 1986 Commonwealth Games, including 163 gold medals, 163 silver medals and 176 bronze medals.
