New Delhi, India

New Delhi is the capital city of India located inside the great metropolis of Delhi. It was designed by the renowned British architect Edward Lutyens. The wide roads- lined with trees, the architectural excellence of its grand structures all adds to the distinction of New Delhi, India as the capital city. The powerhouse of Indian politics, New Delhi houses a number of important national institutions.
History
The origin capital of India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi owing to the strategic location of the city of Delhi in North India.
In 1956 Delhi was converted into an Union territory. From 1991 New Delhi, India became formally known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Location
The city is located to the west of the Yamuna river and lies right beside the old city of Delhi which was built by Shah Jahan.
Buildings, structures and Roads
Most of the structures of New Delhi,India has the deft touches of Lutyens written all over it and the city is also sometimes referred to as Lutyen's Delhi. The magnificent sructure of the Rashtrapati Bhavan set on top of the Raisana Hill is the central attraction. The North and South Blocks or the Secretariat buildings are located nearby. The seat of India's democracy-the Parliament House is situated at the Sansad Marg. The two main stretches of roads around which the city of New Delhi is structured are the Rajpath and the Janpath.
Transportation Facilities
The main modes of transport in the city of New Delhi are buses,auto-rikhsaws, taxis and the suburban railways. The newly opened metro is increasingly becoming a popular mode of transport.

The historic India Gate – a memorial to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in World War I, the stunning Red Fort, the imposing Rashtapati Bhavan , the Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb,Chandni Chowk and the Lotus Temple are all places of must visit on a traveler's itinerary. Raj Ghat- Gandhiji's last resting place is frequently visited by the tourists. New Delhi has a number of shopping complexes which are always bustling with enthusiastic shoppers. The city of Agra with the incredible Taj Mahal is a few hours drive from New Delhi.
