Having been ranked 4th in the last held Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, the sporting event is an important opportunity for Indian sports to shine on its own home grounds. The preparations for the Commonwealth Games New Delhi Special are on in full swing in New Delhi.
A new Games Village is being built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) with state -of -the -art facilities providing the athletes with world class comfort. The east bank of Yamuna River has been chosen as its location, adjacent to the Akshardham temple. The Games Village will be spread over an area of 158.4 acres and involve a total expenditure of 230.7 million dollars. The famous Indian hospitality will be extended to the athletes at this village making them feel at home.
The infrastructural facilities in the city of New Delhi is also being revamped to met the exacting world standards for hosting an international sporting meet.10 new flyovers are being constructed specially for the Commonwealth Games New Delhi Special. An 8 lane expressway from Delhi to Gurgaon and a new tunnel project of the Yamuna Bridge is also being taken up.
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium complex , Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium , Tyagaraj Sports Complex, Talkotra Indoor Stadium , Siri Fort Sports Complex, Yamuna Sports Complex, R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex and SPM Swimming Pool Complex have all been chosen as the venue for hosting the games.
