Australian players were the winners in the first Commonwealth water polo championships event. Canada and England were the countries who won the silver and bronze medals respectively. The 2002 Men's championships in the Commonwealth water polo event were a huge success. There were nine teams who were divided in two pools. In the pool A there were Malta, Australia, South Africa, Wales and Singapore. The teams in pool B there were England, Canada, Northern Ireland and New Zealand. In the year 2006, the next Commonwealth water polo championships took place in Perth in Australia. Australia was the team which won this event in both the categories of men and women. Canada ranked in the second position in the men's event.
