Rugby Sevens happens to one of the most popular events at the Commonwealth Games. It is one of the only two games played in the Commonwealth games meant exclusively for males. The other male-only Commonwealth games is boxing. Commonwealth Rugby Sevens Championships was introduced in the Commonwealth Games during the 16th Commonwealth Games (1998 Commonwealth Games) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. New Zealand proved itself a natural in rugby, winning old in all the three Games. In 1998 Commonwealth Games, amidst a cheering crowd consisting of 20,000 fans at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, New Zealand bagged its 100th Commonwealth Games medal with a 21-12 win over the reigning champions, Fiji, at the Commonwealth Rugby Sevens Championships. Jonah Lomu was the well-deserved Man of the Match. While Fiji settled for silver in Commonwealth Rugby Sevens Championships, Australia bagged the bronze, under the leadership of veteran star David Campese, Australia, beating Samoa 33-12.
The 2002 Commonwealth Games were held at Manchester, United Kingdom. New Zealand won the gold again, Fiji stuck to silver while South Africa bagged the bronze this time. At the 2006 Commonwealth games held in Melbourne, Australia, Commonwealth Rugby Sevens Championships were held in the Telstra Dome, on the western edge of Melbourne's Central Business District. Preliminary matches were held on 16 March, followed by finals the following day. The gold medal was won by New Zealand who defeated England 29-21 in the final on 17th March 2006.
