Commonwealth Rowing Championships

Rowing had made its debut as an event in the 1986 Commonwealth Games held in Scotland. Prior to that, rowing had been one of the Commonwealth events at Cardiff in 1958. The rowing event became so popular that it was decided that a separate Commonwealth Rowing Championships would be held from then on. Starting from then, Commonwealth Rowing Championships were held in conjunction with the Commonwealth games, without it being a part of the Commonwealth Games.
The first Commonwealth Rowing Championships were held at Fanshawe Lake, London, Ontario, Canada, in 1994 and for the second time in 1998, at the same venue.
Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, England, witnessed the next Commonwealth Rowing Championships in August 2002. Scotland proudly hosted the event in Strathclyde Park, Motherwell, in 2006.
A total of 69 medals were won at the 2002 Commonwealth Rowing Championships, 23 each of gold, silver and bronze medals.
  • England, the host country, had put up the best performance, winning 5 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze medals
  • Australia won 7 gold and 1 silver medal
  • Canada won 6 gold and 4 silver medals
  • Scotland won 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals
  • Wales won 1 gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze medals
  • Zimbabwe bagged 1 gold and 1 silver medal
  • New Zealand managed to bag 1 gold and 1 bronze medal
  • South Africa could win only one 1 gold medal
  • Northern Ireland won 2 silver and 4 bronze medals
  • Guernsey didn't win any medal.
A total of 61 were given out at the 2006 Commonwealth Rowing Championships, including 21 gold medals, 21 silver medals and 19 bronze medals.
  • England maintained its top position, winning 10 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals
  • South Africa won 4 gold and 1 bronze medals
  • Canada won 3 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals
  • Scotland won 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals
  • Northern Ireland bagged 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medal
  • New Zealand managed to win only 1 gold medal
  • Wales got 3 silver and 4 bronze medals
