Commonwealth Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship

Commonwealth Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship was introduced in 2002, when it was held in conjunction with Commonwealth Games, not as a separate Games. Rhythmic gymnasts Hannah McKibbon, Rebecca Jose, Jackie Steinke and Rachel Ennis wowed the crowd all over the world with their rhythmic movements with hoop, rope, ball and clubs. England scored 230.051 points, while Australia finished second with 208.433 points. England thus pleasantly surprised all and bagged a well-deserved six gold and four silver medals.
However, the grand success was a little underplayed.
The medals were given away at a separate event termed the Commonwealth Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship, rather than treating it as a special event at the main Commonwealth Games. However, their medals won by participants were paid due consideration by the Commonwealth Games Federation, but the Olympic sport was excluded because of "a lack of space and time".
The other nations, apart from England, which took part in the 2002 Commonwealth Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship were:
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Cyprus
  • Namibia
  • New Zealand
  • Northern Ireland
  • Scotland
  • South Africa
  • Wales
However, England failed to sustain its exceptional achievement. At the last Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, English gymnasts dropped out before the final. In 1999 they were classified 32nd in the world championships in Osaka, but in the 2001 world championships in Madrid last October, McKibbon, the British champion, who finished ninth.
19-year-old Alexandra Orlando of Toronto was definitely the star of the 2006 Commonwealth Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship. She won the title in the ball, rope, clubs and ribbon events at the Canadian rhythmic gymnastics championships in Surrey, B.C. This was an impressive follow-up after setting the record of winning six gold medals earlier the same year at the Commonwealth games.
