Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships

The IPF-affiliated Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships made its debut in Northumberland, England on the 9-11 September 2005. The success of the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships is largely due to the active roles played by Fred McKenzie, Meet Director and Fund Raiser, and Peter Fiore, Director of Powerlifting Great Britain and their teams.
The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships was a big affair, with almost 100 lifters from eleven nations competed for the prestigious title. The nations at the inaugural Championships were:
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • England
  • Fiji
  • New Zealand
  • India
  • Nigeria
  • Northern Ireland
  • Pakistan
  • Scotland
  • South Africa
  • Wales
Nigeria nominated a team but backed out from the The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships at the last moment. Sri Lanka was offered to send a lifter on an all expenses paid trip to the The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships venue by the Meet Director. The friendly gesture was meant to lift the spirits of Sri Lanka after the disastrous Tsunami. However, Sri Lanka declined the offer.Unfortunately, the The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships coincided with the IPF Junior Worlds, which is perhaps responsible for the lesser number of nations participating than was estimated.
The team from England, bagged the trophies. The prestigious trophies were donated by the IPF. Both, in the male and female categories, went to participants from England. Ten percent of the participants were tested for drug intake.
A Commonwealth Powerlifting Federation has been established and approved by the IPF. The IPF was formed with only 7 nations and now registers close to 100. This vouches for the popularity of the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships. The Commonwealth Championships will undoubtedly become a major attraction and significant event on the IPF calendar. The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships have been decided to be held every two years. The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships 2007 were held at Holiday Inn, Christchurch, New Zealand. Indian women team were crowned winners while the men's team finished runners-up. While the women team bagged 11 gold, five silver and three bronze medals, the men's team was equally impressive with 11 gold, six silver and three bronze at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships 2007.
