About Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games is a significant event in the sports world. Every sports fan residing in every corner of the globe waits anxiously for the Commonwealth Games to take place every four years. Currently, as many as 5000 gifted athletes from 71 teams out of 53 members of the Commonwealth Of Nations and participate in the Commonwealth Games every year.
The first Commonwealth Games, then known as the British Empire Games, was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Australia remains the highest scoring team for ten Commonwealth Games. In 2006, the Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne, Australia. The upcoming Commonwealth Games are all set to be held in New Delhi, India in 2010. Delhi won the right to host the 2010 Games by defeating the Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 at the CGF General Assembly held in Montego Bay in November 2003.
The excitement and anticipation about Commonwealth Games has already gripped Delhi. The city is getting a major makeover worth $17.5 billion dollars in preparation of the Commonwealth Games. New roads are under construction, investments are being made in public transports and new power plants are coming up. A new state-of-the-art Games Village is being built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) with a focus on maximizing athlete comfort.

The public came to know about Commonwealth games logo on 6th January 2008 during an event held at the India Gate. The logo is designed after the 'chakra', and signifies freedom, unity, and power. Its spiraling upwards symbolizes India's rise as a global power and its transition from tradition to modernity. The multiple colors indicate India's unity in diversity, and each part of the logo symbolizes India welcoming the 71 Commonwealth nations and territories.
