Neither Christchurch nor Auckland is a first time bidder. In fact, both cities have hosted the Commonwealth games before. New Zealand Commonwealth Games hosting history points out that Christchurch hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1974, and Auckland in 1950 and 1990.
According to general public opinion, Auckland would have a better chance of winning over Christchurch in an international competition, despite the fact that they are the more recent host.
It is not yet official where Christchurch proposes to hold the Games. They might consider the QE2 Stadium, after giving it a makeover. Other potential sites would be the Jade Stadium, the Westpac Center with a capacity of around eight thousand, the QE2 Park Aquatic Center and the Town Hall.
