Commonwealth Games is one of the popular multinational events in the sports calendar, which occur after every 3 years. It started in the year 1930 at Hamilton, in Ontario, Canada. At first it was known as British Empire games, which later changed into Commonwealth Games. Commonwealth Games Federation or CGF is the organizer which manages the whole event. 2010 Commonwealth games, the next one, is scheduled at New Delhi, the capital city of India. It will be held in Asia for the second time. Sri Lanka is one of the popular participants of Commonwealth Games, which take part in nearly every year.

Sri Lanka, popularly known as 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean', is located at the southern coast of India. This country serves as an important link in between South East Asia and West Asia. Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and Tamil along with Sinhala are the official languages of this country. Sri Lankan Rupee is the currency of Sri Lanka. Commonwealth games is one of the notable events of Sri lanka.

Participation of Sri Lanka in Commonwealth Games:
Sri Lanka started participating from the year 1974 and it continues to take par in this prestigious event till 1982; then after a short break, it again resumed to participate from the year 1990 and has been continuing to do so. Sri Lanka has started practicing hard, which will be evident in the next Commonwealth Games. In the last Commonwealth Games, though Sri Lanka participated in a number of events comprising of a 67 member team, it managed to win only 1 gold medal. Chinthana Vidanage won the gold medal in the weightlifting competition, and he succeeded in lifting a weight of 62 kg.
