Saint Helena first participated at the commonwealth in the year 1982. The nation did not participate in between 1986 and 1994.
It again participated in the Commonwealth games of 1998 and took place in Malaysia. The nation sent a team of two to the Commonwealth games in 1998. The island gathered money to send Simon Henry and Patrick Young. They participated in the men's fullborne rifle event. Simon Henry finished 37th and Patrick Young ranked 44th in the game. In the year 2002 the nation again took part in the same event. It took five weeks to reach Manchester from Saint Helena.
In the year 2006, Saint Helena sent a small team to Melbourne of Australia. The nation participated in the men's marathon. Erroll Duncan took part in the event and represented Saint Helena. He was then 45 years old and was running his first marathon. Even though he finished the race in the last position, yet the whole audience cheered for him. He took 3 hours 11 minutes and 21 seconds to finish the event. Saint Helena could not manage to get any medal in the year 2006. The nation is again participating in the 2010 Commonwealth games, which is scheduled to be held at New Delhi.

Saint Helena is an island in the Atlantic Ocean. It covers an area of 420 square km and consist of three island groups such as Saint Helena itself, Tristan da Cunha and Ascension Island. Each island group has its unique geography. The nation has a population of about 7000 people. It is a volcanic and mountainous island and is approximately 1931 kms from the coast of Angola in Africa. Saint Helena was discovered on May 21 1502 by the Portuguese navigator João da Nova. It is one of the remotest island and can only be reached by boat. The British Government has announced to construct an airport and it is expected to complete in the year 2011 or 2012.
