Nigeria is participating in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It is one of the 71 participating nations of the Commonwealth Games. The multinational and multi-sports event is scheduled to be held at New Delhi of India. The strength of the Nigeria lies in disciplines such as boxing, weightlifting and sprint events.
Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games:
Nigeria made its debut in the Commonwealth Games in the year 1950, which was held in Auckland of New Zealand. The first applaud at the Commonwealth Games include a silver medal in the high jump event.
It was won by J.O. Majekodunmi in 1950. The first gold medal was won by Emmanuel Ifeajuna during the Commonwealth Games, in Vancouver Canada in the year 1954. The nation won the gold medal in the high jump event. The Commonwealth Games was then known as the British Empire games. In the later years, Nigeria has produced many medalists in different events of the Commonwealth Games. These medalists include Chidi Imo, Joe Orewa, Innocent Egbunike, Jerry Okorodudu, Falilat Ogunkoya, David Dafiagbon, Mary Onyali, Olawumi Majekodunmi, Fatima Yusuf, Kuburat Owolabi, Atanda Musa and others.
The nation, however, did not participate in the Commonwealth Games of 1998. It was held at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. In the year 2002, Moses Toriola won the table tennis singles title for Nigeria. In the year 2006, Nigeria represented themselves in the Commonwealth Games that was held in Melbourne of Australia. The nation won 4 gold medals in disciplines such as table tennis, athletics and weightlifting. It also won 6 silver medals and 7 bronze medals.
