New Zealand


New Zealand is a small and beautiful country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two large islands (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands, the most notable among which are Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. New Zealand happens to be a prominent participant in the Commonwealth Games.
New Zealand's association with the Commonwealth games can be traced back to as far back as 1930, when it competed for the Commonwealth games for the first time. New Zealand is one of the six countries to have participated in every Commonwealth Games held so far.
In 2002 Commonwealth Games, New Zealand won silver in both mens' and womens' basketball, silver in mens' hockey, bronze in womens' hockey, 1 gold and 2 silvers in womens' netball, 3 golds in mens' rugby. 2006 Commonwealth Games was significant for New Zealand in that the country sent the largest team of participants to the Games, comprising of 255 athletes who took part in 19 events.
New Zealand had put up an admirable performance in the 2006 Commonwealth games. However, the world expected much better performance from them, which the country fell short of. In fact, New Zealand exhibited the poorest performance in 2006 Commonwealth games since 1982. New Zealand managed to bag 31 medals in total and finished ninth in the 2006 Commonwealth games.
