Previously the games were known as the ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’, from 1966 to 1974. Later on the games came to be known as ‘The Commonwealth Games’ ever since 1978. The participation in the Common wealth games has been considered by many nations world wide.
However it may be said that there is a selection procedure on the basis of which the countries are selected for participation. In the Common wealth games to be held in Delhi, Namibia is one of the participating nations.

Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa on the Atlantic coast. It shares the borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east, and South Africa to the south. In 1990, it gained independence from South Africa. The capital city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Performance of Namibia at the Commonwealth Games:
Namibia’s national teams participated in the Commonwealth Games apart from taking part in the World Youth Games. The participation is basically approved by the Namibia National Sports Commission, International Games Committee chairperson Bob Vezera Kandetu. The Namibian team took part in the 2002 Common wealth Games. For the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Namibia had sent representatives in the seven codes of athletics, namely swimming, bowls, rugby sevens, boxing, cycling and pistol shooting. The Namibian team also took part in the Common wealth games that took place in Manchester, England, in the year 2002. Besides the Common wealth Games, Namibia’s sport interest also exists in foot or soccer. The most popular sport in Namibia is association football (soccer). Other sport popularity includes the Rugby union and cricket. Namibia participated in the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups. They also played in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.
