Malta

Malta is a small and densely-populated island nation comprising an archipelago of seven islands, three of which are inhabited. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea within Southern Europe. The 2006 Commonwealth Games at Melbourne was marked by the best ever in the history of Maltese sport, making the people and the Government of Malta proud.
In the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Malta won one silver and one bronze, an improvement from the one medal Malta won in 2002 Commonwealth games held in Manchester. Maltese athletes finished among the top 25 per cent in all the events they participated in.
On the sixth day of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Rebecca Attard Madyson hit a perfect 25 in her last qualification round to secure the silver medal in Women's Trap Singles, ending runner-up to South Africa's Diane Swanton. On the other hand, the people of Malta rejoiced over the bronze medal won by William Chetcuti in Men's Double Trap on the 8th day of 2006 Commonwealth Games. Malta had also sent participants in the categories of:
  • Cycling
  • Basketball
  • Lawn Balls
  • Shooting
  • Squash
  • Swimming
  • Table tennis
  • Weightlifting

Malta is one of the 71 countries or commonwealth teams to participate in the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi. The Maltese Government blamed the lack of fund as the obstacle in Malta's way to victory in more categories. With funds received by the country from many sources, the world is expecting even better performance from the participants from Malta.
