India is the only third developing nation in the world which has got the opportunity to host the Commonwealth games in 2010 at Delhi. The previous developing nations were Jamaica in 1966 and Malaysia in 1998. This is only the second time the event is scheduled to be held in Asia. The history of the Commonwealth games dates back to the year 1891. About 400 athletes from eleven countries took part in the first Commonwealth Games. Previously the games were known as the ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’. The passage of years saw the re-Christianizing of games as the ‘The Commonwealth Games’.
Every four years the Games celebrate the shared principles, customs and language of the Commonwealth. Among the member nations taking part in the games, mention may be made of the Maldives.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), with its command center in London, is the utmost power in all matters pertaining to the Commonwealth Games. The CGF is presided over through its General Assembly and the Executive Board. The Executive Board consists of officers of the CGF and a Regional Vice President from each of the six CGF regions. There are 53 Commonwealth countries embodied by 71 Commonwealth Games Associations that can enter a team in the Commonwealth Games because some Commonwealth countries have more than one CGA (Commonwealth Games Associations).

One of the interesting facts related with Maldives is that the island is spread over 90,000 square kilometers, but less than 0.5 per cent is dry land. The Maldives took part in the 2006 Commonwealth games but failed to meet with any success.
