Malaysia


The name "Malaysia" was adopted in the year 1963 when 14-state federation was formed by the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo and Sarawak. Comprising of thirteen states and three federal territories in Southeast Asia, Malaysia covers a total landmass of about 329,847 km˛. Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia while Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government. The country is actually alienated into two regions — Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo — by the South China Sea. Malaysia is bordered by Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. The Malaysian government is very much modeled after the Westminster parliamentary system.

In the Commonwealth games 2006, held at Melbourne Malaysia performed well and ended up with their medal tally to 29. Malaysia was represented at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne by a 254 member strong contingent that comprised of 170 sportspersons and 84 officials. They won 7 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals. The sports events that they participated covered weightlifting, badminton, lawn bowls, shooting, aquatics, gymnastics and hockey. Since the team has talented sportsmen it is likely that in the forthcoming Commonwealth games, 2010, we will get to see some sparkles from the Malaysian team.
