The Republic of Malawi previously known as Nyasaland is a democratic, densely populated country positioned in southeastern Africa. The country is often glorified as the "warm heart of Africa”. It is bordered by Zambia to the north-west, Tanzania to the north and Mozambique, which surrounds it on the east, south and west. Though the origin of the name Malawi is still shrouded in mystery, researches have shown that the name might have had it origin from the southern tribes or from the "glitter of the sun rising across the lake". Malawi is one of the Commonwealth nations and is one of the competing nations in the forthcoming Commonwealth games to be staged at Delhi in 2010.

The Commonwealth games had its beginning in the 1890s. It was basically initiated with an aim to increase the goodwill and instigate a good understanding of the regions within the British Empire. Previously the Commonwealth games were known as ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’ or even ‘British Commonwealth Games’. The apex body which governs the Commonwealth games is Commonwealth Games Federation or the CGF. The role of CGF extends beyond the facilitation of the Commonwealth Games only. The CGF also supports the Commonwealth Youth Games and Single Sport Commonwealth Championships. The CGF is the custodian of the Commonwealth Games and establishes Games-wide necessities and values.

Malawi took part in the 2006 Commonwealth games which was held in Melbourne. In spite of all efforts during their participation the team did not taste success. However with several sports associations having sprung up since then at Malawi, chances look bright for the team to perform well in the Commonwealth games, scheduled to be held at Delhi, 2010.
