Commonwealth Games is a multi sport and multinational event, which happen after every 3 years of time. it was started in the year 1930, when it was known as British Empire Games; later, it came to be known as Commonwealth Games. India is quite a strong participant in Commonwealth games, in nearly every year.
India as a hosting venue of 2010 Commonwealth games:
India is a South Asian country, which is seventh largest according to the geographical boundary and the second most populous country in all over the globe. Indian Ocean borders it in the south, Bay of Bengal on the east and Arabian Sea on the west.
It is bordered by Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Burma and China. It is also in the vicinity of Maldives, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, in the Indian Ocean. 2010 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be held in India itself, in its capital city, New Delhi. This is the second time, when this event will be hosted in Asia. The success of this event will strengthen India's bid for the Summer Olympics of 2016.
Participation of India in Commonwealth Games:
India has been participating in Commonwealth Games right from the time it started. Though it was not a participant in the first time, it has continuously participated from the the year 1934, that is the second time, it has been continuing with some breaks in between. After 1934, India participated in 1938, 1954 and 1958 and again from 1966 to 1982. India again came back to the scene in the year 1990 and has been continuing till date.

Participation of India in 2006 Commonwealth Games:
In the 2006 Commonwealth Games, India showed a brilliant performance and managed to win a total of 50 medals, comprising of 22 gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze medals. The sports persons won gold medals in shooting, table tennis, weightlifting and boxing. Silver medals were won in the events of weightlifting, shooing, boxing, athletics and women hockey. India also brought back home bronze medals in weightlifting, shooting, badminton, athletics, table tennis and boxing. A total of 270 member team comprising of 77 officials and 183 sports persons represented India in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which happened in Melbourne, Australia. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, silver medalist of Summer Olympics 2004, was the flag bearer of India.
Participation of India in 2010 Commonwealth Games:
India is quite geared up with the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, as its own country is hosting the event this year. They are expected to show brilliant performance and maintain the tradition of winning, this year too.
