Canada


Canada is one of the six nations to participate in all the Commonwealth Games. The nation is one of the 71 participating teams in 2010 Commonwealth Olympic Games, which is scheduled to take place at New Delhi. Canada organized the Commonwealth Games of 1994.
Canada at Commonwealth Games:
In the 1994 Commonwealth Games, wrestling made a return as an event. The opening day saw 39 wrestles competing with each other at the elimination rounds. The wrestling took place in four different weight categories.
Canada participated in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which took place in Melbourne of Australia. It comprised 253 sportsmen and several officials. Wheelchair athlete Chantal Petitclerc was chosen as the flag bearer for Canada at the opening ceremony of 2006 Commonwealth Games. Canada won 86 medals in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The nation own 26 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 31 bronze medals.
The nation won gold medals in events such as Gymnastics, diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, weightlifting and high jump. In the men's diving event Alexandre Despatie won in the 1 m and 3 m springboard. Blythe Hartley won gold in the 1 m and 3 m women's springboard diving event. The women's cycling event was won by Marie-Helene Premont and the high jump event was won by Mark Boswell.
Canada also won several gymnastic events. Grant Golding bagged the men's parallel bars title. The women's uneven beam and women's beam was won by Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs. Alexandra Orlando won several gymnastic events such as Women's Rhythmic Ribbon, Women's Rhythmic Ball, Women's Rhythmic All-Around, Women's Rhythmic Clubs and Women's Rhythmic Rope. Kyle Shewfelt won the Men's Vault event. Canada won the men's 20m breaststroke swimming event. Mike Brown won gold medal for that. In the weightlifting discipline, Canada won 2 medals in the men's category and 2 medals for the women's category of weight lifting.

Canada won silver medals in disciplines such as boxing, diving, cycling, swimming, shooting, weightlifting and gymnastics. Bronze medals are won in events such as cycling, diving, lawn bowls, shooting, gymnastics, swimming and weightlifting.
