Botswana is one of the 71 participating nations in the Commonwealth Games of 2010. The multi sports event will be held at New Delhi of India. Botswana is strong in disciplines such as Lawn bowls, boxing and athletics. Boxers from Botswana have gained success at international sports events such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and many more.
Botswana at the Commonwealth Games:
Botswana did not appear at the Commonwealth Games before 1974 in Christchurch of New Zealand. Babs Anderson picked up the first medal for Botswana in the Commonwealth Games of 1986. After that, the nation participated in the eight Commonwealth Games.
In the Common wealth Games of 1994, Botswana won a single medal. France Mabiletsa took bronze in the light-heavyweight division of boxing. The sports events were held at Victoria of British Columbia in Canada. They sent a team of 33 sportsmen but failed to grab any medal.
The Commonwealth Games of 2002 was held at Manchester of England. Botswana again participated in the game and won two medals for themselves. Athletes Lechedzani Luza and Gable Garenamotse won silver medals in the Men’s Flyweight Division Boxing and Men’s Long Jump respectively, while Gilbert Khunwane won a bronze medal in the Lightweight Boxing event.
In the Commonwealth Games of 2006, Botswana sent 23 sportsmen and few officials. It was held at Melbourne of Australia. Botswana won two medals at this game. The nation won a silver medal in Men’s long jump event. Gable Garenamotse won the title. Mmoloki Nogeng won the bronze medal in the 54 kg boxing event.
