The Common wealth Games was initiated a long time back when a sporting event of brought together several members of the then British Empire; this was an idea proposed by Reverend Astley Cooper in 1891. He suggested a "Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival to be conducted every year with an aim to increase the goodwill and understanding among the several regions of the British Empire. The first ever Common wealth games were held in the year 1930. About 400 athletes from eleven countries participated in the first Commonwealth Games. Barbados is one of the competing nations in the Common wealth scheduled to be held in the 2010 Common wealth games in Delhi.
Previously the Common wealth games were known as British Empire and Commonwealth Games or British Commonwealth Games. However from 1978, the games held came to be known as the Common wealth games. The Common wealth games conducted its full circle in the year 2002 when it returned to its place of origin, Manchester, England. Melbourne 2006 recorded a total of 7,000 athletes and officials participating; an all time high in the history of the Games. Barbados is situated just east of the Caribbean Sea, is a self-governing island nation in the western Atlantic Ocean. Its closest island neighbors comprise of Saint Vincent and Saint Lucia, to the east and west respectively. To the south lies Trinidad and Tobago—with which Barbados now shares a permanent official maritime edge and also the South American mainland. The total land area of Barbados is about 430 square kilometers (166 square miles), and primarily can be categorized in the low lying region category. Just like the other Caribbean countries, cricket is a favorite sport of Barbados. However, besides Cricket the Barbados teams have also send in their squad for the Common wealth games that took place on four yearly basis.
Performance of Barbados at the Commonwealth Games:
Barbados was represented by field hockey team in the 2006 Common wealth games that took place in Melbourne. This was women’s field hockey team. However tough the team participated in the games, it could not qualify and subsequently did not win any medal. Besides the filed hockey team, Barbados had also sent a boxing team. Anderson Fitzgerald Emmanuel won a Bronze in the heavyweight-91kg, boxing category.
