Bangladesh


Officially called the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Bangladesh is a South Asian country. Its main neighbor is India. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small portion with in the far southeast region. Collectively with West Bengal (Indian state), it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The name Bangladesh means "Country of Bengal" in the official Bengali language. The country is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. It also has the highest poverty rate in the world. Even with all factors, the country has shown tremendous potential for displaying its talent in the Commonwealth games which takes place at different venues every four years across the globe.
It is one of the member nations taking part in the Commonwealth games which is scheduled to be held at Delhi in 2010.
The history of the Commonwealth games dates back to 1891 when it was proposed by Reverend Astley Cooper with an aim to strengthen the ties many regions within the British Empire. The first ever Commonwealth Games held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1930. Previously the Commonwealth games were known as ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’ and ‘British Commonwealth Games’. After 1978, the games came to be known as only “the Commonwealth Games”. The apex body that governs the whole proceedings of Commonwealth games is Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), with its head office in London. The CGF is governed through its General Assembly and the Executive Board.

Bangladesh had taken part in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Common wealth games and met with little success. However with continuous participation, the teams were able to display their improvement and were acknowledged to have potential for their efforts. In the 2006 Commonwealth games that took place in Melbourne, the Bangladesh team sent a squad of about 20 sportsmen with additional officials. It won a silver medal in Shooting, Men's 10m Air Rifle Pairs in that year.
